S&F deals with all aspects of family law - divorce, paternity, annulment, guardianships, name changes, adoptions (including step parent adoptions), and post-divorce actions, including modification and contempt actions and related appeals and tax issues. We know that clients often have no choice but to face such issues head on and that they may find themselves living through an emotional and traumatic time. Our practice of this area of law is therefore conducted with proper sensitivity.

"Clients want to be divorced, not get divorced," observed attorney Mary Schmidt . Nonetheless, individuals who find themselves facing this major life change must go through the process and our firm is there to help them get through it with minimal upset and confusion.

When it comes to divorce, it is critical to seek answers early and become familiar with your legal rights and obligations. Even if you only think you may be divorcing, you should talk to an attorney who is well versed in family law matters. Many times, issues can be resolved amicably and a separation agreement can be negotiated. Mediation is always the first step.

In addition to divorce, our clients seek counsel with us on related matters, such as an annulment, legal separation, modification of a previous divorce ruling, the filing of a contempt action or decisions relating to child custody. These issues may require obtaining court orders concerning custody, spousal and child support and other matters.

"Parents realize the strain a court battle causes," acknowledged attorney Phyllis Federico . "Oftentimes, after a very difficult custody battle, parents will realize how the court proceedings have affected their children and will take a step back... Custody disputes can tear families apart, pitting parents against each other and requiring that they point out the former spouse's faults. The battle can leave such a rift in the family that few can repair the damage that may be done."

We consider each child custody case, and represent each client, on an individual basis, developing unique approaches to resolving problems for that particular client.
